Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS)– Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

The award winning Valley Children's Hospital, is seeking a Clinical Nurse Specialist to join its NICU team.Located in the heart of the affordable, Central Valley of California, Valley Children’s is just a short drive to 3 national parks and your choice of California coastline beaches. The hospital is one of the largest pediatric healthcare networks in the Country.

The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) is an advanced practice nurse who functions in the role of expert clinician, educator, leader, consultant and researcher. In collaboration with the healthcare team, the CNS monitors the clinical care of patients and provides clinical support to improve patient care and outcomes. With in-depth knowledge and skills, advanced judgment and clinical experience in a nursing specialty, the CNS sphere of influence includes the care of the patient/family, practice of nursing and providing solutions for complex systems and processes. The CNS serves as a role model, patient advocate, charge agent, and leader to enhance patient care. This position practices within the scope of the California Nursing Practices Act and in accordance with Valley Children's policies.

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Valley Children’s Hospital is Central California’s only Regional Level IV NICU - the highest level of medical care available for premature and critically ill newborns. With a focus on family-centered care, our patients have access to a full range of pediatric and surgical specialists that treat potentially life-threatening illnesses due to extreme prematurity, congenital defects, injury, chronic illnesses and more. Our NICU patient ratios are 1:1 or 2:1 in the ICU and 1:3 in Intermediate Care. Collectively, our NICUs provide specialized care for more than 1,400 fragile babies and nearly 25,000 patient days a year.

Our team supports a network of NICUs throughout Central California, providing services for Madera County, Merced County, Fresno County, Kings County and Tulare County. Our level II and level III satellite NICUs (Fresno, Merced & Hanford) are staffed with Valley Children’s team of experts to provide patients the opportunity to receive treatment closer to home. The nurses in these satellite units are trained to attend high-risk deliveries and resuscitate babies in the delivery room if needed. Our NICU is ranked as one of the best children’s hospitals in Neonatology by U.S. News & World Report for 2023-2024- the seventh such ranking for our NICU. Our expert team consists of more than 250 neonatal nurses, constantly striving to innovate and improve patient care so babies have the best outcomes.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum 3 years full time or equivalent clinical experience with at least one year equivalent experience working in a regional or community NICU
  • Minimum 5 years increasingly responsible experience which demonstrates proficiency in the skills and knowledge required to perform the job
  • Extensive advanced knowledge of nursing principles, practiced and systems

EDUCATION/LICENSES/CERTIFICATIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in nursing with emphasis in Clinical Nurse Specialty
  • Active California Registered Nurse (RN) license
  • Active Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) license
  • Neonatal Intensive Care Nurse (NCC) or Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN) in Neonatal required
  • HeartCode Basic Life Support (BLS) within 30 days of hire or transfer into position
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) within 6 months of hire or transfer into position

Hours, Compensation and Benefits: This is a Full Time, Exempt level position. Position hours are Mon-Fri 8 am to 5 pm. Final compensation will be dependent upon skills and experience. Relocation bonus may be available.
